Plans to Build a Queen Size Platform Bed with Drawers

Building a queen size platform bed with drawers is a great way to add style and storage space to your bedroom. This project is relatively easy to complete, and it can be customized to fit your specific needs. Here are the essential steps on how to build a platform bed with drawers:

Materials You'll Need:

  • 2x6 lumber (for the frame and drawer sides)
  • 2x4 lumber (for the drawer fronts and backs)
  • 1x12 lumber (for the platform top)
  • Plywood (for the drawer bottoms)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Drawer slides
  • Handles or pulls

Step 1: Build the Frame

Begin by building the bed frame. Cut the 2x6 lumber to the following lengths: 2 pieces at 80 inches, 2 pieces at 60 inches, and 4 pieces at 11 inches. Assemble the frame using wood screws and wood glue. The 80-inch pieces should form the length of the bed, while the 60-inch pieces should form the width. The 11-inch pieces will be used to support the slats for the platform top.

Step 2: Build the Drawers

Next, build the drawers. Cut the 2x4 lumber to the following lengths: 4 pieces at 27 inches, 4 pieces at 18 inches, and 8 pieces at 11 inches. Assemble the drawer boxes using wood screws and wood glue. Attach the drawer bottoms using plywood and wood glue.

Step 3: Attach the Drawer Slides

Once the drawers are assembled, attach the drawer slides to the inside of the bed frame and to the sides of the drawers. This will allow the drawers to slide in and out smoothly.

Step 4: Build the Platform Top

Cut the 1x12 lumber to the following lengths: 2 pieces at 80 inches and 3 pieces at 60 inches. Assemble the platform top by attaching the 80-inch pieces to the 60-inch pieces using wood screws and wood glue. The platform top should fit snugly inside the frame.

Step 5: Attach the Handles or Pulls

Once the platform top is attached, install the handles or pulls on the drawer fronts.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Finally, sand the entire bed and apply your desired finish. You can paint it, stain it, or leave it unfinished. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the bed.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality materials to ensure the longevity of your bed.
  • Make sure the drawers are the same size so they fit properly within the frame.
  • Attach the drawer slides securely to ensure smooth operation.
  • Add a mattress and bedding, and enjoy your new platform bed with drawers!
