Making a Headboard for a Queen-Size Bed

Materials

To make a headboard for a queen-size bed using upholstery foam, you will need the following materials:

1 piece of 4-inch thick upholstery foam, cut to 60 inches wide x 30 inches high
1 yard of fabric
1/2 yard of batting
1/4 yard of muslin
Staple gun and staples
Scissors
Measuring tape
Pencil

Instructions

Cut the fabric and batting. Measure and cut the fabric and batting to the same size as the upholstery foam. Add an additional 4 inches to each side of the fabric for wrapping around the foam.
Wrap the foam in the batting. Place the batting on a flat surface and center the upholstery foam on top of it. Wrap the batting around the foam and secure it with staples.
Wrap the fabric around the foam. Center the fabric on top of the batting and wrap it around the foam. Pull the fabric taut and secure it with staples. Trim any excess fabric.
Create the headboard frame. The headboard frame will support the foam and fabric. You can use any type of wood you like for the frame, but 1x4s or 2x4s are a good choice. Cut the wood to the desired size and shape of the headboard.
Attach the foam to the frame. Place the foam on top of the frame and secure it with screws or nails. Make sure the foam is centered on the frame.
Add trim (optional). If desired, you can add trim to the headboard to give it a more finished look. You can use any type of trim you like, such as molding, rope, or fabric.

Tips

If you want to add tufting to your headboard, you can do so before attaching the fabric to the frame. To tuft the headboard, simply sew buttons through the fabric and batting and then tie the buttons together on the back of the frame.
You can use any type of fabric for your headboard, but upholstery fabric is a good choice because it is durable and easy to clean.
