How to Sew a Bedspread: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating a custom bedspread is a rewarding project that can transform the look of your bedroom. Whether you're a seasoned sewer or just starting out, follow these step-by-step instructions to create a beautiful and functional bedspread.
Materials:
- Fabric (amount varies based on bed size)
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Fabric scissors
- Sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
- Thread
- Optional: Quilting batting, decorative trim
Instructions:
1. Measure and Cut the Fabric:
Measure the width and length of your bed, including any overhang. Add 4 inches to both measurements for seam allowances. Cut two pieces of fabric to these dimensions.
2. Prepare the Fabric (Optional):
If desired, sandwich a layer of quilting batting between the two pieces of fabric. Trim the batting to be slightly smaller than the fabric.
3. Pin and Sew the Sides:
Place the fabric pieces right sides together and pin around the perimeter, leaving a 12-18 inch opening on one side.
Sew the sides using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, starting and stopping at the opening.
4. Insert Decorative Trim (Optional):
If desired, add decorative trim around the edge of the bedspread. Pin and sew the trim in place.
5. Sew the Opening:
Turn the bedspread right side out and press. Fold the raw edges of the opening inward by 1/2 inch and press.
Fold the edges again by 1/2 inch and press. Pin and sew the opening closed using a blind stitch or topstitch.
6. Hem the Bedspread:
Fold the edges of the bedspread inward by 1 inch and press. Fold inward again by 1 inch and press.
Pin and sew the hem using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
7. Add a Quilting Pattern (Optional):
If desired, quilt the bedspread by stitching through the layers of fabric and batting.
8. Finishing Touches:
Press the finished bedspread and admire your creation. Customize it further by adding decorative pillows or throws to complete the look.
Tips:
- Choose a durable and easy-to-care-for fabric for the bedspread.
- Consider the size of your bed and the desired overhang when choosing the fabric amount.
- Use a sharp needle and good quality thread for the best results.
- Take your time and be patient, especially when hemming the bedspread.
- If you're a beginner, start with a smaller bed size or a simple fabric.
With careful planning and a bit of effort, you can create a beautiful and unique bedspread that will enhance the style and comfort of your bedroom.
