How to Make Waterproof Bed Pads
Waterproof bed pads are a great way to protect your mattress from spills and accidents. They are also helpful for people who have incontinence or other medical conditions that require them to wear absorbent pads. While you can buy waterproof bed pads in stores, they can be expensive. With a little bit of time and effort, you can make your own waterproof bed pads for a fraction of the cost.
Materials You Will Need:
1. Waterproof fabric (such as vinyl, polyurethane, or nylon) 2. Flannel or other absorbent fabric 3. Quilt batting or other cushioning material 4. Sewing machine 5. Thread 6. Scissors 7. Measuring tape or ruler 8. Marking pen or pencil
Instructions:
1. Measure the size of your mattress and add 6 inches to the length and width. This will give you the size of the fabric you will need for the top and bottom layers of the bed pad.
2. Cut two pieces of waterproof fabric to the size you measured in Step 1. These pieces will form the top and bottom layers of the bed pad.
3. Cut two pieces of flannel or other absorbent fabric to the same size as the waterproof fabric pieces. These pieces will form the middle layer of the bed pad and will absorb any spills or accidents.
4. Cut a piece of quilt batting or other cushioning material to the same size as the waterproof fabric pieces. This piece will provide cushioning and make the bed pad more comfortable to sleep on.
5. Place the waterproof fabric piece on the bottom. Place the flannel or absorbent fabric piece on top of the waterproof fabric piece. Place the quilt batting or cushioning material piece on top of the flannel or absorbent fabric piece. Finally, place the second waterproof fabric piece on top of the quilt batting or cushioning material piece.
6. Pin the layers of the bed pad together around the edges. Sew around the edges of the bed pad, using a zigzag stitch or other stitch that will prevent the layers from separating.
7. Turn the bed pad right side out and insert it onto the mattress. The waterproof side should be facing up.
Tips:
1. You can use any type of waterproof fabric for the top and bottom layers of the bed pad. However, vinyl and polyurethane are the most durable and waterproof materials.
2. You can use any type of flannel or absorbent fabric for the middle layer of the bed pad. However, fleece and terry cloth are the most absorbent materials.
3. You can use any type of quilt batting or cushioning material for the middle layer of the bed pad. However, polyester and cotton batting are the most common materials.
4. You can add a layer of embroidery or other decorative stitching to the bed pad for a more personalized touch.
