How to Make a Queen Floating Bed

A floating bed provides a striking visual centerpiece in any bedroom. The illusion of the bed hovering above the floor creates a modern and minimalist aesthetic. This article details how to construct a sturdy and stylish queen-sized floating platform bed.

Planning and Material Gathering

Careful planning is crucial for a successful floating bed project. Begin by determining the desired dimensions. Standard queen mattress dimensions are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. The platform should extend beyond the mattress on all sides for a clean, floating appearance. An additional 3-4 inches on each side is recommended, resulting in a platform approximately 66-68 inches wide and 86-88 inches long.

Once the dimensions are finalized, create a detailed sketch or utilize design software to visualize the bed frame. This will help in determining the necessary materials and cuts. The primary material for the frame will be lumber, ideally a strong and durable hardwood like oak or maple. For a lighter option, high-grade plywood can be used. The quantity of lumber will depend on the specific design and dimensions. Other essential materials include wood screws, wood glue, a center support beam, and finishing supplies (sandpaper, stain or paint, sealant).

Before beginning construction, gather all tools required for the project. Essential tools include a measuring tape, a saw (circular saw or miter saw), a drill, a screwdriver, a level, clamps, sandpaper, and safety glasses.

Constructing the Frame

The core of the floating bed is a robust frame capable of supporting the mattress and occupants. Begin by cutting the lumber according to the planned dimensions. The frame will consist of a rectangular perimeter constructed from two long side boards and two shorter end boards. These boards should be joined using wood glue and screws, ensuring a perfectly square frame. Clamping the boards together while the glue dries helps maintain alignment.

For added strength and stability, incorporate a center support beam running the length of the frame. This beam should be positioned directly beneath where the center of the mattress will rest. Secure the center support beam to the side boards with screws and wood glue. Additional cross supports can be added between the perimeter and the central support beam to enhance weight distribution.

To create the floating effect, a recessed base is constructed within the perimeter frame. This recessed base will support the mattress and sit flush with the top edges of the frame, leaving the frame sides exposed to create the illusion of floating. Cut lumber for the recessed base, ensuring it is slightly smaller than the interior dimensions of the perimeter frame. Secure the recessed base to the frame using screws and wood glue, ensuring it is level and evenly spaced.

Finishing and Installation

After constructing the frame, sand all surfaces thoroughly to achieve a smooth finish. This is also the time to address any imperfections or gaps. Wood filler can be used to fill any cracks or holes. Once sanded, apply a stain or paint according to personal preference. Allow the finish to dry completely before applying a sealant to protect the wood and enhance its longevity.

The final step is installing the platform. Position the platform in the desired location within the bedroom. For added stability, consider securing the platform to the wall using L-brackets or other appropriate hardware. This is particularly important if the bed will be placed against a wall. Ensure the platform is level before placing the mattress on top. Adding a box spring is optional, depending on personal preference and mattress type.

With the platform securely in place and the mattress positioned, the floating bed is complete. The resulting bed provides a modern and stylish centerpiece, optimizing space and enhancing the aesthetics of the bedroom.
