How to Construct a Full-Size Loft Bed

Loft beds are a great way to save space in a small room, and they can also be a lot of fun for kids. If you're handy with tools, you can build your own full-size loft bed with relative ease.

Materials You'll Need:

8-foot pine boards (4 for the frame, 4 for the slats)
12-inch pine boards (2 for the legs)
16-inch pine boards (2 for the ladder)
1-inch wood screws
2-inch wood screws
Safety rail
Mattress

Tools You'll Need:

Drill
Circular saw
Clamps
Level
Measuring tape
Pencil

Instructions:

Cut the boards to length. The frame boards should be cut to 8 feet long. The leg boards should be cut to 6 feet long. The ladder boards should be cut to 12 feet long.
Assemble the frame. Use wood screws to attach the frame boards together to form a rectangle. The frame should be 5 feet wide by 8 feet long.
Attach the legs. Use wood screws to attach the leg boards to the inside corners of the frame. The legs should be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the frame.
Assemble the ladder. Use wood screws to attach the ladder boards together to form a ladder that is 12 feet long. The ladder should have 12 rungs, each of which is spaced 1 foot apart.
Attach the ladder to the frame. Use wood screws to attach the top of the ladder to the inside of the frame, centered on the long side of the bed. The bottom of the ladder should rest on the floor.
Install the safety rail. Use wood screws to attach the safety rail to the inside of the frame, along the long side of the bed opposite the ladder. The safety rail should be high enough to prevent the sleeper from rolling off the bed.
Place the mattress on the bed. The mattress should be a full-size mattress, which is 5 feet wide by 8 feet long.

Tips:

Use a level to make sure that the frame is level before attaching the legs.
Use clamps to hold the boards in place while you're drilling and screwing them together.
Pre-drill the holes for the screws to prevent the wood from splitting.
Be sure to use strong wood screws that are long enough to penetrate the wood securely.

With a little time and effort, you can build a full-size loft bed that is both sturdy and stylish.
