How to Make a Trundle Bed: A Step-by-Step Guide

Trundle beds are a fantastic way to maximize space and provide extra sleeping arrangements for guests or family members. They are perfect for small bedrooms, children's rooms, or guest rooms. Building a trundle bed is a relatively straightforward project that can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need:

Lumber (pine or MDF)
Plywood (for the platform)
Casters
Wood screws
Wood glue
Drill
Circular saw
Measuring tape

Step 1: Build the Trundle Frame

Start by building the frame for the trundle. Cut four pieces of lumber to the length of the trundle and two pieces to the width. Assemble the frame by attaching the side pieces to the head and foot pieces using wood screws and wood glue.

Step 2: Add the Platform

Cut a piece of plywood to fit inside the trundle frame. This will serve as the platform for the trundle mattress. Attach the plywood to the frame using wood screws.

Step 3: Install the Casters

Attach casters to the bottom corners of the trundle frame. This will allow the trundle to roll in and out from under the bed.

Step 4: Build the Mattress Support

To create support for the trundle mattress, cut two pieces of lumber to the length of the mattress and one piece to the width. Assemble the support by attaching the side pieces to the headboard piece using wood screws and wood glue. The width of the mattress support should be slightly less than the width of the trundle frame.

Step 5: Attach the Mattress Support

Attach the mattress support to the trundle frame using wood screws. The support should be placed in the center of the frame, with an equal amount of space on either side.

Step 6: Add the Mattress

Place the trundle mattress on top of the mattress support. The mattress should fit snugly within the frame.

Step 7: Test the Trundle

Test the trundle by rolling it in and out from under the bed. Make sure the casters roll smoothly and the mattress support provides adequate support for the mattress.

Additional Tips:

If you want the trundle to be able to lock in place, you can add a latch to the side of the trundle frame.
You can paint or stain the trundle bed to match the existing furniture in the room.
Make sure the casters are rated for the weight of the trundle and mattress.
