How to Build a Queen Size Platform Bed With Storage
Building a queen size platform bed with storage is a great way to add extra storage space to your bedroom while also creating a stylish and modern look. This project is relatively easy to build and can be completed in a weekend with the right tools and materials.
Materials you'll need:
- 8 - 2x6 boards, 8 feet long
- 4 - 2x4 boards, 8 feet long
- 1 sheet of 3/4 inch plywood, 4 feet x 8 feet
- 1 box of 2 1/2 inch wood screws
- 1 box of 1 1/4 inch wood screws
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper
- Paint or stain (optional)
Tools you'll need:
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Clamps
- Level
- Measuring tape
- Safety glasses
Instructions:
Step 1: Cut the lumber
- Cut the 2x6 boards to the following lengths: 4 – 84 inches, 4 - 54 inches.
- Cut the 2x4 boards to the following lengths: 4 – 60 inches.
- Cut the plywood to the following dimensions: 60 inches x 84 inches.
Step 2: Assemble the frame
- Attach the 2x6 boards to the 2x4 legs using 2 1/2 inch wood screws. The 2x6 boards should be flush with the tops of the legs.
- Make sure the frame is square by measuring the diagonals. The diagonals should be equal in length.
- Reinforce the corners of the frame by adding corner braces. Cut 2x4 boards to fit diagonally across the corners of the frame and attach them with 2 1/2 inch wood screws.
Step 3: Attach the plywood deck
- Center the plywood deck on top of the frame and attach it with 1 1/4 inch wood screws. Make sure the screws are countersunk so that they do not protrude above the surface of the plywood.
- Sand the edges of the plywood to smooth them out.
Step 4: Add storage drawers (optional)
- If you want to add storage drawers, you can build them using 1x12 boards and 1/2 inch plywood.
- Cut the 1x12 boards to the following lengths: 2 – 54 inches, 2 – 18 inches.
- Cut the 1/2 inch plywood to the following dimensions: 2 – 54 inches x 18 inches.
- Assemble the drawers by attaching the 1x12 boards to the plywood using 1 1/4 inch wood screws.
- Attach the drawers to the frame of the bed using drawer slides.
Step 5: Finish the bed
- Sand the entire bed to smooth out any rough edges.
- Apply paint or stain to the bed to finish it to your liking.
