How to Expand a Double Bed Frame to Queen Size

If you're looking for an affordable way to upgrade your sleeping arrangements, transitioning your double bed frame to a queen size is a great option. By following these simple steps, you can expand your sleeping space without breaking the bank.

Materials You'll Need:

*
  • 2x4 lumber (8 feet long)
  • *
  • Wood screws
  • *
  • Drill
  • *
  • Circular saw (optional)
  • Step 1: Disassemble the Double Bed Frame

Begin by dismantling the double bed frame. Remove the headboard, footboard, and side rails. If necessary, separate the wooden slats from the side rails.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the 2x4s

Measure the width of your double bed frame at the headboard and footboard. Subtract 6 inches from this measurement to determine the length of the 2x4s you need. Cut four 2x4s to this length.

Step 3: Assemble the Headboard and Footboard Extensions

Attach one 2x4 to each side of the headboard and footboard using wood screws. Ensure that the 2x4s are flush with the edges of the headboard and footboard.

Step 4: Attach the Side Rail Extensions

Position the remaining two 2x4s parallel to the existing side rails on the inside of the bed frame. Extend the 2x4s beyond the end of the side rails by the same amount you subtracted in Step 2.

    Step 5: Secure the Extensions

Using wood screws, fix the 2x4 extensions to the side rails. Additionally, reinforce the connections between the extensions and the headboard and footboard extensions.

Step 6: Reassemble the Bed Frame

Reassemble the bed frame by attaching the headboard, footboard, and side rails together. If you removed the wooden slats, reposition them on the expanded side rails.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Queen-Size Bed

Congratulations! You have successfully transformed your double bed frame into a queen-size. Enjoy the extra sleeping space and improved comfort.

    Tips:

    *
  • For added durability, consider using 4x4 lumber instead of 2x4s.
  • *
  • If you don't have a circular saw, you can use a miter saw to make the cuts.
  • *
  • If the lumber you're using is untreated, apply wood preservative for protection.
  • *
  • Double-check all screws and connections before using the bed.
