How to Build Your Own Queen Size Platform Bed

Building your own queen size platform bed is a great way to save money and add a personal touch to your bedroom. It's also a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend. Here are the essential steps to follow:

Materials:

  • 2x6 lumber (8 pieces, each 8 feet long)
  • 2x4 lumber (12 pieces, each 8 feet long)
  • Plywood (1 sheet, 4x8 feet, 3/4-inch thick)
  • Wood screws (2 1/2-inch and 3-inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Primer and paint (optional)

Tools:

  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Countersink bit
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Level

Instructions:

1. Cut the 2x6 lumber. You will need to cut the 2x6 lumber into the following pieces:

  • 4 pieces, each 60 inches long (for the side rails)
  • 4 pieces, each 80 inches long (for the headboard and footboard)

2. Assemble the side rails. Join two of the 60-inch 2x6s together end-to-end using wood glue and 3-inch wood screws. Repeat this step to create the other side rail.

3. Assemble the headboard and footboard. Join two of the 80-inch 2x6s together end-to-end using wood glue and 3-inch wood screws. Repeat this step to create the other headboard and footboard.

4. Attach the headboard and footboard to the side rails. Place the headboard and footboard on the side rails, flush with the edges. Secure them with 2 1/2-inch wood screws.

5. Cut the plywood. Cut the plywood to fit the inside of the platform bed frame. The plywood should be 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.

6. Attach the plywood to the platform bed frame. Place the plywood on top of the platform bed frame and secure it with 2 1/2-inch wood screws. Countersink the screws so that they are flush with the surface of the plywood.

7. Prime and paint the platform bed (optional). If desired, you can prime and paint the platform bed to match your bedroom decor. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the bed.

Tips:

  • Use a level to make sure that the platform bed frame is level before attaching the plywood.
  • Countersink the screws so that they are flush with the surface of the wood. This will help to prevent the screws from snagging on your bedding.
  • If you are using a mattress that is thicker than 10 inches, you may need to adjust the height of the platform bed frame.

Building your own queen size platform bed is a great way to save money and add a personal touch to your bedroom. By following these simple steps, you can create a beautiful and functional bed that will last for years to come.
