How to Build a Twin-Size Murphy Bed
Murphy beds, also known as wall beds, are an excellent solution for saving space in small bedrooms or guest rooms. They fold up into a cabinet when not in use, creating more usable floor space. Building a twin-size Murphy bed is a moderately challenging project, but it can be done by a skilled DIYer with the right tools and materials.
Materials:
* 3/4-inch plywood for the frame (two 3-foot x 6-foot pieces)
* 1/2-inch plywood for the mattress support (two 3-foot x 6-foot pieces)
* 2-inch x 4-inch lumber for the frame and supports (six 8-foot pieces)
* 1-inch x 3-inch lumber for the hinges (two 6-foot pieces)
* Twin-size mattress
* Box spring (optional)
* Wood screws
* Nails
* Wood glue
* Sandpaper
* Paint or stain (optional)
Tools:
* Circular saw
* Miter saw
* Drill
* Driver
* Clamps
* Level
* Measuring tape
* Pencil
Instructions:
1. Cut the Frame:
* Cut two 3-foot x 6-foot rectangles from the 3/4-inch plywood for the bed frame. * Cut two 2-inch x 4-inch boards to 3 feet for the top and bottom rails of the frame. * Cut four 2-inch x 4-inch boards to 6 feet for the side rails of the frame.2. Assemble the Frame:
* Attach the top and bottom rails to the side rails using wood screws. * Make sure the frame is square by measuring the diagonals from corner to corner. * Reinforce the frame with angle brackets at each corner.3. Build the Mattress Support:
* Cut two 3-foot x 6-foot rectangles from the 1/2-inch plywood for the mattress support. * Cut six 2-inch x 4-inch boards to 3 feet for the supports of the mattress support. * Space the supports evenly across the plywood and attach them with screws.4. Attach the Mattress Support:
* Place the mattress support inside the bed frame. * Attach the mattress support to the frame using screws. * Ensure the mattress support is level.5. Build the Hinges:
* Cut two 1-inch x 3-inch boards to 6 feet for the hinges. * Cut two 2-inch x 4-inch boards to 12 inches for the hinge supports. * Attach the hinges to the hinge supports using screws. * Attach the hinge supports to the inside of the frame, one on each side, 12 inches from the top.6. Attach the Bed to the Wall:
* Place the bed against the wall where you want it to be. * Level the bed and mark the location of the hinges on the wall. * Drill pilot holes into the wall and install screws to secure the hinges. * Fold the bed up against the wall and make sure it is secure.7. Finishing:
* Sand the bed to smooth any rough edges. * Paint or stain the bed if desired. * Place the mattress on the bed.Tips:
