How To Build A Queen Size Floating Bed: A Comprehensive Guide

A floating bed is a bed that appears to float above the ground, giving your bedroom a modern and minimalist look. It is a great way to save space and make your room look more spacious. Building a queen-size floating bed is not a difficult task, and it can be done in a weekend with the right tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need:

  • 2x6 lumber (8 pieces, each 8 feet long)
  • 2x4 lumber (4 pieces, each 8 feet long)
  • Plywood (1 sheet, 4 feet x 8 feet)
  • Mattress support slats (6 pieces, each 2 inches wide and 8 feet long)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Tools You'll Need:

  • Circular saw or miter saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper
  • Measuring tape
  • Level

Instructions:

Step 1: Build the Frame

Cut the 2x6 lumber into the following lengths:

  • 2 pieces at 8 feet long
  • 2 pieces at 6 feet long
  • 4 pieces at 2 feet long

Assemble the frame by attaching the 2x6s together with wood screws. The two 8-foot pieces will form the sides of the bed, the two 6-foot pieces will form the ends, and the four 2-foot pieces will form the legs.

Step 2: Attach the Plywood

Cut the plywood to fit the inside of the frame. Attach the plywood to the frame with wood screws.

Step 3: Install the Mattress Support Slats

Cut the mattress support slats to fit the inside of the frame. Space the slats evenly apart and attach them to the frame with wood screws.

Step 4: Sand and Finish

Sand the bed frame and plywood to smooth out any rough edges. You can then paint or stain the bed to match your bedroom décor.

Step 5: Attach the Bed to the Wall

For added stability, you can attach the bed to the wall. To do this, drill pilot holes into the studs in the wall and then screw the bed frame into the studs.

Congratulations! You have now successfully built a queen-size floating bed. Enjoy your new bed!

Tips:

  • If you are using a heavy mattress, you may need to add additional support to the bed frame.
  • You can customize the look of your bed by painting or staining it any color you like.
  • Floating beds can be used in any bedroom, but they are especially well-suited for small bedrooms where space is limited.
