How to Build a Queen Bed Frame with Storage

Building your own queen bed frame with storage is a great project for any DIYer. It's a relatively simple build that can be completed in a weekend, and it can save you a lot of money over buying a new bed frame. Plus, you can customize it to your own liking, so it's the perfect way to add a personal touch to your bedroom.

Materials:

  • 2x4 lumber (8 pieces at 6 feet long, 8 pieces at 3 feet long)
  • 2x6 lumber (2 pieces at 6 feet long)
  • 3/4-inch plywood (1 piece at 4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 1/2-inch plywood (1 piece at 4 feet by 8 feet)
  • Wood screws (2-inch and 3-inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Sander
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the 2x4 lumber into the following pieces:
    • 8 pieces at 6 feet long
    • 8 pieces at 3 feet long
  2. Cut the 2x6 lumber into the following pieces:
    • 2 pieces at 6 feet long
  3. Cut the 3/4-inch plywood into the following pieces:
    • 1 piece at 4 feet by 6 feet
    • 1 piece at 4 feet by 2 feet
  4. Cut the 1/2-inch plywood into the following pieces:
    • 1 piece at 4 feet by 6 feet
    • 1 piece at 4 feet by 2 feet
  5. Assemble the headboard and footboard.
    • Attach the 2x6 lumber to the 2x4 lumber to form a rectangle.
    • Attach the 3/4-inch plywood to the 2x4 lumber.
    • Attach the 1/2-inch plywood to the 3/4-inch plywood.
  6. Assemble the side rails.
    • Attach the 2x4 lumber to the 2x6 lumber to form a rectangle.
    • Attach the 3/4-inch plywood to the 2x4 lumber.
    • Attach the 1/2-inch plywood to the 3/4-inch plywood.
  7. Attach the headboard and footboard to the side rails.
    • Place the headboard and footboard on the floor, with the 2x6 lumber facing up.
    • Place the side rails on the headboard and footboard, with the 2x4 lumber facing down.
    • Attach the side rails to the headboard and footboard using wood screws.
  8. Reinforce the bed frame.
    • Attach 2x4 lumber to the inside of the bed frame, between the headboard and footboard.
    • Attach 2x4 lumber to the inside of the bed frame, between the side rails.
  9. Sand the bed frame.
  10. Paint or stain the bed frame (optional).
