How to Build a Queen Bed Foundation

A bed foundation is an essential part of any bed frame, as it provides support for the mattress and helps to keep it in place. Building your own queen bed foundation is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.

Materials:

2x4 lumber: 8 pieces, each 8 feet long
2x6 lumber: 4 pieces, each 8 feet long
3/4-inch plywood: 1 sheet, 4 feet by 8 feet
1-1/4-inch wood screws
Wood glue
Sandpaper
Paint or stain (optional)

Tools:

Circular saw or miter saw
Drill
Hammer
Tape measure
Level
Safety glasses
Dust mask

Instructions:

Cut the 2x4s. Cut four 2x4s to 84 inches long and four 2x4s to 60 inches long.
Assemble the foundation frame. Using the 84-inch 2x4s, construct a rectangle frame that is 60 inches wide by 84 inches long. Secure the joints with 1-1/4-inch wood screws.
Attach the 2x6s. Cut the 2x6s to 60 inches long and attach them to the inside of the frame, one in the center and one at each end. Secure the 2x6s with wood screws.
Cut the plywood. Cut the plywood to the same size as the foundation frame, which is 60 inches wide by 84 inches long.
Attach the plywood. Place the plywood on top of the foundation frame and secure it with wood screws.
Sand the foundation. Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges on the foundation.
Paint or stain the foundation. If desired, you can paint or stain the foundation to match the decor of your bedroom.

Tips:

Be sure to wear safety glasses and a dust mask when working with power tools.
Use a level to make sure that the foundation is level before attaching the plywood.
If you are having trouble attaching the plywood to the frame, you can use a hammer and nails instead of wood screws.
You can also add a layer of foam or batting to the top of the foundation to make it more comfortable.

Once you have built your queen bed foundation, you can add a mattress and bed frame to complete your bed.
