How To Build A King Size Bed Frame With Drawers
Building a king size bed frame with drawers is a great way to add extra storage space to your bedroom while also creating a stylish and functional piece of furniture. With a little planning and effort, you can easily build your own king size bed frame with drawers in a weekend.
Materials and Tools Needed
Before you begin, you'll need to gather the following materials and tools:
- Eight 2x6 boards, 8 feet long
- Four 2x4 boards, 8 feet long
- One sheet of 3/4-inch plywood, 4 feet by 8 feet
- Two dozen 2-inch wood screws
- One dozen 1-1/2-inch wood screws
- A drill
- A saw
- A measuring tape
- A level
- A sander
- Wood glue
- Paint or stain (optional)
- Drawer slides
- Drawer fronts
Step 1: Build the Bed Frame
1. Begin by cutting the 2x6 boards to the following lengths:
- Four boards at 78 inches long
- Four boards at 39 inches long
2. Next, cut the 2x4 boards to the following lengths:
- Four boards at 72 inches long
- Four boards at 36 inches long
3. Assemble the bed frame by first attaching the four 78-inch 2x6 boards to the four 72-inch 2x4 boards with 2-inch wood screws. Space the 2x6 boards evenly so that there is a gap of about 1 inch between each board.
4. Next, attach the four 39-inch 2x6 boards to the four 36-inch 2x4 boards with 2-inch wood screws. Space the 2x6 boards evenly so that there is a gap of about 1 inch between each board.
5. Finally, attach the two halves of the bed frame together with 1-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure that the two halves are aligned properly so that the bed frame is square.
Step 2: Cut the Plywood
1. Cut the plywood to the following size: 76 inches by 38 inches.
2. Sand the edges of the plywood to smooth them out.
3. Attach the plywood to the top of the bed frame with 1-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure that the plywood is centered on the bed frame and that it is flush with the top of the frame.
Step 3: Build the Drawers
1. Cut the 2x6 boards to the following lengths:
- Eight boards at 18 inches long
- Eight boards at 12 inches long
2. Assemble the drawers by first attaching the four 18-inch 2x6 boards to the four 12-inch 2x6 boards with 2-inch wood screws. Space the 2x6 boards evenly so that there is a gap of about 1 inch between each board.
3. Next, attach the bottom of the drawer to the frame with 1-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure that the bottom of the drawer is flush with the bottom of the frame.
4. Finally, attach the drawer fronts to the drawers with 1-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure that the drawer fronts are centered on the drawers and that they are flush with the front of the drawers.
Step 4: Install the Drawer Slides
1. Attach the drawer slides to the sides of the bed frame with 1-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure that the drawer slides are evenly spaced and that they are level.
2. Insert the drawers into the drawer slides.
Step 5: Finish the Bed Frame
1. Sand the bed frame to smooth out any rough edges.
2. Apply a coat of paint or stain to the bed frame. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely.
3. Enjoy your new king size bed frame with drawers!
