How to Build a King Platform Bed with Storage Drawers
A platform bed with storage drawers is perfect for those who want a modern and stylish bed that also offers plenty of storage space. While king-size beds are often considered to be too large for small spaces, a platform bed can make a king-size bed appear more compact and less imposing. The drawers underneath the bed can be used to store blankets, pillows, linens, or anything else you need to keep out of sight. Plus, building a platform bed with storage drawers is a great way to save money and customize your bed to your own style.
Here are the essential steps on how to build a king platform bed with storage drawers:
Materials You'll Need:
- 1x8 pine boards (8 pieces, cut to 84 inches long)
- 1x4 pine boards (4 pieces, cut to 84 inches long)
- 2x4 pine boards (4 pieces, cut to 76 inches long)
- 2x4 pine boards (8 pieces, cut to 24 inches long)
- Kreg jig
- 1-1/4 inch pocket hole screws
- Wood glue
- Clamps
- Plywood (cut to 76x80 inches)
- Fabric
- Staple gun
- Drawer pulls
Step 1: Assemble the frame
Start by assembling the frame of the bed. Attach the 1x8 pine boards to the 2x4 pine boards using 1-1/4 inch pocket hole screws. Make sure the 1x8 pine boards are flush with the edges of the 2x4 pine boards. Once the frame is assembled, attach the 1x4 pine boards to the inside of the frame to create the sides of the bed. The 1x4 pine boards should be flush with the top of the 2x4 pine boards.
Step 2: Build the drawers
Next, build the drawers. Attach the 2x4 pine boards to the 1x8 pine boards using 1-1/4 inch pocket hole screws. Make sure the 2x4 pine boards are flush with the edges of the 1x8 pine boards. Once the drawers are assembled, attach the plywood to the bottom of the drawers using wood glue and clamps. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Install the drawer slides
Install the drawer slides to the inside of the frame and the sides of the drawers. Make sure the drawer slides are level and secure. Once the drawer slides are installed, test the drawers to make sure they open and close smoothly.
Step 4: Upholster the drawers (optional)
If you want to upholster the drawers, cut the fabric to the desired size. Wrap the fabric around the drawers and secure it with a staple gun. Make sure the fabric is taut and free of wrinkles. Once the drawers are upholstered, attach the drawer pulls.
Step 5: Enjoy your new bed!
Your new king platform bed with storage drawers is now complete! Enjoy the extra storage space and the modern style of your new bed.
