Building a full-size bed frame with drawers can be a daunting task, but it's definitely doable with a little planning and effort. This guide will walk you through the entire process step-by-step, from gathering your materials to finishing the frame with a fresh coat of paint.
Materials You'll Need:
- 2x4 lumber (about 12 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 2x6 lumber (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 1x4 lumber (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 1x6 lumber (4 pieces, 8 feet long)
- 3/4-inch plywood (1 sheet, 4x8 feet)
- 1/4-inch plywood (1 sheet, 4x8 feet)
- Wood screws (2-inch, 2-1/2-inch, and 3-inch)
- Drawer slides (4 sets)
- Drawer pulls
- Paint or stain (optional)
Tools You'll Need:
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Countersink bit
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Clamps
- Sandpaper
- Paintbrush or sprayer (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Cut the Frame Pieces
Cut the 2x4 lumber into the following pieces:
- 4 pieces at 84 inches long (side rails)
- 2 pieces at 58 inches long (bed ends)
Cut the 2x6 lumber into the following pieces:
- 4 pieces at 75 inches long (legs)
Step 2: Assemble the Frame
Attach the side rails to the bed ends using 2-inch wood screws. Make sure the side rails are flush with the edges of the bed ends.
Next, attach the legs to the corners of the frame using 2-1/2-inch wood screws. Make sure the legs are flush with the bottom of the frame.
Step 3: Build the Drawer Boxes
Cut the 1x4 lumber into the following pieces:
- 8 pieces at 24 inches long (drawer sides)
- 8 pieces at 18 inches long (drawer fronts and backs)
Cut the 1/4-inch plywood into the following pieces:
- 4 pieces at 24 inches x 18 inches (drawer bottoms)
Assemble the drawer boxes by attaching the sides to the fronts and backs using 1-1/2-inch wood screws. Then, attach the bottoms to the drawer boxes using 1-1/4-inch wood screws.
Step 4: Install the Drawer Slides
Attach the drawer slides to the inside of the frame and the bottom of the drawer boxes. Make sure the drawer slides are evenly spaced and level.
Step 5: Insert the Drawers
Insert the drawer boxes into the frame by sliding them onto the drawer slides. Make sure the drawers are aligned properly and open and close smoothly.
Step 6: Finish the Frame
Sand the frame smooth and remove any splinters. Then, paint or stain the frame as desired. Once the paint or stain is dry, attach the drawer pulls to the drawers.
Congratulations! You've now built a full-size bed frame with drawers. Enjoy your new furniture!
