Build Your Own Bunk Bed With Trundle: A Step-by-Step Guide

Bunk beds with trundles are a great space-saving solution for kids' rooms or guest rooms. They offer extra sleeping space without taking up too much floor area. Building your own bunk bed with trundle is a fun and rewarding project that can be completed in a weekend or two.

Here are the basic steps on how to build a bunk bed with trundle:

1. Gather Your Materials

  • 2x4 lumber for the frame
  • 1x12 lumber for the slats
  • 1x8 lumber for the sides
  • 1/2-inch plywood for the deck
  • 3/4-inch plywood for the trundle
  • Mattresses
  • Hardware (screws, bolts, nuts, washers)

2. Build the Frame

The frame of the bunk bed is made from 2x4 lumber. Cut the lumber to the following lengths:

  • 4 pieces at 75 inches (length of the bed)
  • 4 pieces at 55 inches (height of the bed)
  • 2 pieces at 55 inches (width of the bed)

Assemble the frame by screwing the 2x4s together at the corners. Make sure the frame is square before you tighten the screws.

3. Attach the Slats

The slats of the bunk bed are made from 1x12 lumber. Cut the lumber to the following lengths:

  • 16 pieces at 75 inches

Attach the slats to the frame by screwing them in place. Space the slats evenly apart.

4. Build the Sides

The sides of the bunk bed are made from 1x8 lumber. Cut the lumber to the following lengths:

  • 2 pieces at 75 inches
  • 2 pieces at 55 inches

Assemble the sides by screwing the 1x8s together at the corners. Make sure the sides are square before you tighten the screws.

5. Attach the Sides to the Frame

Attach the sides to the frame by screwing them in place. Make sure the sides are flush with the top of the frame.

6. Build the Deck

The deck of the bunk bed is made from 1/2-inch plywood. Cut the plywood to the following size:

  • 75 inches by 55 inches

Attach the deck to the frame by screwing it in place. Make sure the deck is flush with the top of the sides.

7. Build the Trundle

The trundle of the bunk bed is made from 3/4-inch plywood. Cut the plywood to the following size:

  • 75 inches by 39 inches

Attach the trundle to the frame by screwing it in place. Make sure the trundle is flush with the bottom of the frame.

8. Add the Mattresses

Add the mattresses to the bunk bed and trundle. The top bunk mattress should be a standard twin size mattress. The trundle mattress should be a twin XL mattress.

9. Enjoy Your New Bunk Bed!
