DIY Queen Wood Bed Frame: A Step-by-Step Guide

Building your own wood bed frame is a great way to save money and customize your bedroom furniture to match your style. Plus, it's a fun and rewarding project that can be completed in a few hours.

Materials:

  • 12 2x4s, 8 feet long
  • 8 2x6s, 8 feet long
  • 16 1-1/2 inch wood screws
  • 8 2-1/2 inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the Wood:
    • Cut four 2x4s to 84 inches long.
    • Cut four 2x4s to 60 inches long.
    • Cut two 2x6s to 84 inches long.
    • Cut two 2x6s to 60 inches long.
  2. Assemble the Side Rails:
    • Place two 84-inch 2x4s flat on the floor, parallel to each other and 60 inches apart.
    • Place a 60-inch 2x4 across the two 84-inch 2x4s, centering it between them.
    • Secure the 60-inch 2x4 to the 84-inch 2x4s using four 1-1/2 inch wood screws.
    • Repeat this step to assemble the other side rail.
  3. Assemble the Headboard and Footboard:
    • Place two 84-inch 2x6s flat on the floor, parallel to each other and 24 inches apart.
    • Place a 60-inch 2x6 across the two 84-inch 2x6s, centering it between them.
    • Secure the 60-inch 2x6 to the 84-inch 2x6s using four 2-1/2 inch wood screws.
    • Repeat this step to assemble the footboard.
  4. Attach the Side Rails to the Headboard and Footboard:
    • Place one side rail against the headboard, with the 84-inch 2x4s flush with the top and bottom of the headboard.
    • Secure the side rail to the headboard using four 1-1/2 inch wood screws.
    • Repeat this step to attach the other side rail to the headboard.
    • Repeat steps a-c to attach the side rails to the footboard.
  5. Reinforce the Joints:
    • Apply wood glue to the joints where the side rails meet the headboard and footboard.
    • Clamp the joints together and allow the glue to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  6. Sand and Finish the Bed Frame:
    • Sand the bed frame with medium-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.
    • Apply paint or stain to the bed frame, if desired.

Once the bed frame is finished, you can add a mattress and box spring to complete your new bed.
