Are you ready to upgrade your bedroom with a stylish and functional DIY queen platform bed with headboard? This comprehensive guide will take you step-by-step through the process, ensuring you have a sturdy, stylish, and customized bed that meets all your needs.

Materials and Tools You'll Need:

  • 8x8 lumber (8-foot long, 12-foot long)
  • 2x4 lumber (8-foot long, 10-foot long)
  • Plywood (4x8 sheet, 3/4-inch thick)
  • Mattress and box spring
  • Wood glue
  • 2.5-inch wood screws
  • 1.5-inch wood screws
  • Pocket hole jig (optional but recommended)
  • Circular saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Countersink bit
  • Measuring tape
  • Carpenter's square
  • Sandpaper or sanding block
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step 1: Building the Platform Frame

Begin by cutting the following pieces from the 8x8 lumber:

  • 2 pieces at 60 inches long (side rails)
  • 2 pieces at 80 inches long (headboard and footboard)

Cut the following pieces from the 2x4 lumber:

  • 4 pieces at 56 inches long (platform supports)
  • 2 pieces at 76 inches long (headboard supports)

Assemble the platform frame as follows:

  • Place the side rails parallel to each other, 60 inches apart.
  • Attach the platform supports perpendicularly to the side rails, 16 inches apart, using 2.5-inch wood screws and wood glue.
  • Attach the headboard and footboard to the ends of the side rails using 2.5-inch wood screws.

Step 2: Creating the Headboard

Cut the following pieces from the plywood:

  • 1 piece at 60 inches wide x 40 inches high (headboard panel)
  • 2 pieces at 6 inches wide x 40 inches high (headboard trim)

Attach the headboard panel to the headboard supports using 1.5-inch wood screws, countersinking the screws below the surface.

Attach the headboard trim pieces to the sides of the headboard panel, flush with the top and bottom edges, using 1.5-inch wood screws.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

Sand the platform bed and headboard to smooth any rough edges.

Apply your desired paint or stain to the bed and headboard.

Attach the mattress and box spring to the platform frame, and enjoy your custom-made queen platform bed with headboard!
