Planning and Materials

  • Building the Frame

    1. Cut the lumber: Cut the 2"x4" lumber to the following lengths: 4 pieces at 84", 2 pieces at 60", and 2 pieces at 36". Cut the 2"x6" lumber to the following lengths: 2 pieces at 84" and 2 pieces at 60".

    2. Assemble the side rails: Attach the 84" 2"x4" pieces to the 36" 2"x4" pieces using wood glue and 2" wood screws. Make sure that the 84" pieces are flush with the ends of the 36" pieces.

    3. Attach the head and foot boards: Attach the 84" 2"x6" pieces to the side rails using wood glue and 3" wood screws. Make sure that the 2"x6" pieces are centered on the side rails.

    4. Reinforce the frame: Attach the 60" 2"x4" pieces to the center of the side rails using wood glue and 2" wood screws. This will help to strengthen the frame.

    Creating the Storage Area

    1. Cut the plywood: Cut the 3/4" plywood to the following sizes: 2 pieces at 59"x35" and 2 pieces at 59"x17".

    2. Assemble the storage compartments: Attach the 59"x17" plywood pieces to the inside of the side rails using wood glue and 2" wood screws. These compartments will be used for storage.

    3. Finish the storage area: Cut the remaining 59"x35" plywood piece to fit on top of the storage compartments. Attach it using wood glue and 2" wood screws.

    Finishing Touches

    1. Sand the bed: Sand all of the surfaces of the bed to remove any rough edges.

    2. Apply finish: Apply your desired finish to the bed. You can paint it, stain it, or apply polyurethane.

    3. Enjoy your new bed: Once the finish has dried, you can enjoy your new queen platform bed with storage.
